National Day of Mourning - April 28
National Day of Mourning – Honouring Lives Lost in the Workplace
April 28 is recognized across Canada as the National Day of Mourning, a day to remember and honour those who have lost their lives, been injured, or suffered illness as a result of workplace incidents or exposures.
Every year, thousands of workers across Canada are affected by workplace tragedies. These include:
- Fatal accidents
- Occupational diseases
- Long-term injuries
- Mental health struggles caused by work-related trauma
The Day of Mourning reminds us of the real people and families behind these statistics—and reinforces our commitment to preventing future incidents.
A Moment to Reflect
At 11:00 a.m. on April 28, Canadians are encouraged to pause for a moment of silence to:
- Remember coworkers, friends, and loved ones affected by workplace incidents.
- Show support for those living with work-related injuries or illnesses.
- Reaffirm our shared responsibility to create safer, healthier workplaces.
A Call to Action
While the Day of Mourning is a time for reflection, it is also a call to action—an opportunity to strengthen our health and safety practices by:
- Reporting hazards and near-misses
- Following safe work procedures
- Participating in training and awareness sessions
- Looking out for one another
Together, we can build a workplace culture that prioritizes prevention, education, and compassion.
