Planting a bioswale on campus – an Earth Day success!

On April 22, over 40 student volunteers came together to celebrate Earth Day by planting out the new bioswale at Mohawk College’s Fennell campus. The event was part of Mohawk Sustainability’s ongoing efforts to enhance the presence of nature on campus and create hands-on learning opportunities that empower students to take meaningful action for the environment.

Student volunteers including volunteers from the Green Team– a dedicated group of students passionate about sustainability—planted nearly 500 native grasses and wildflowers in the west campus bioswale. Enabling students to learn about native species and giving them hands on planting experience with green infrastructure. These species were selected for their ability to thrive in local conditions, support wildlife, and improve stormwater management by filtering and slowing runoff before it enters the municipal system.

Native plant species included:

  • Grey-headed Coneflower
  • Big Bluestem
  • Wild False Indigo
  • Frost Aster
  • Spotted Bee Balm
  • Blue Flag Iris
  • Narrow-leaved Vervain
  • Calamint
  • Wild Strawberry

This project was made possible through the Go Wild Grant program by WWF-Canada, which awarded Mohawk College $2,000 to support the creation of this important green infrastructure initiative. We are proud to be one of 60 grant recipients across Canada working to restore native plant habitats and help communities become more resilient to climate change. We gratefully acknowledge the support of WWF-Canada in making this initiative a reality.
