PSW and ECE rapid skills program receive funding support from Ontario government

The Ontario government is investing more than $1.4 million in a Mohawk College project to provide in-class and on-the-job training for people who would like to be an Early Childhood Education Assistant or Personal Support Worker.

Mohawk College, through the City School program, is leading an innovative skills training project in cooperation with local employers to give participants the opportunity to rapidly upgrade their skills to work in occupations that have a high demand for workers.

“We are grateful for the strong support Mohawk College has received from the Province to extend these programs,” said Ron McKerlie, President and CEO of Mohawk College. “This generous funding will provide people with job-specific training and job-ready skills as well as an industry-recognized credential.”

The SkillsAdvance Ontario project will help 70 students in the Early Childhood Education Assistant Program gain the skills and work experience needed by day care centres, after school programming and EarlyOn drop-in centres in Hamilton.

The program will help 64 participants in the Personal Support Worker Training program to acquire the skills to work in the long-term care and community care sectors which have an acute need for employees who can care for our most vulnerable populations.

“Our government recognizes the significant need for skilled personal support and child care workers”, said Donna Skelly, MPP for Flamborough-Glanbrook. “Training programs are an essential part of our economic recovery efforts.”

“With the right training, job seekers and laid-off workers have a shot at landing good jobs” said Monte McNaughton, Minister of Labour, Training and Skills Development. “That’s why our government is supporting innovative training projects in communities across the province.
