Retired professor continues to make a difference to students
When Linda Jones retired from Mohawk College in 2021, she took a pass on the traditional retirement party and instead chose to make her retirement about the students she cares so much about while also honouring the memory of a former colleague.
Linda, a retired professor and coordinator from the Educational Support program, worked with the Mohawk College Foundation to establish the Educational Support Fund. The fund helps students with unexpected costs and emergencies that have the potential to derail their education and prevent them from achieving success.
The idea for the fund was something that Linda and her former colleague and Field Placement Specialist, Amy Ocampo, had spoken about many times. Student success was something they were both passionate about, said Linda. Amy passed away in August of 2020 and Linda saw the fund as an ideal way to honour Amy’s memory.
“I wanted to do something different and leave a legacy for Amy,” said Linda. “It just seemed like a fitting tribute for her and a great way to recognize my retirement as well, reflecting our shared commitment to students.”
Linda came to Mohawk in 2006 after several years working in the elementary school system, first as an educational assistant and then as a teacher. For Linda, teaching in the Educational Support program at Mohawk College was her dream job.
“It was an opportunity to make a difference,” said Linda. “The work Educational Assistants do is important as they support the most vulnerable students. Sharing my passion and experience was a great opportunity to help future generations prepare for the challenges that come with the job.”
The Educational Assistant program, as it was called at the time, was new to Mohawk and one of the first EA diploma programs in Ontario. Linda played a key role in building the program, which is now among the best in the province and well known for producing highly-skilled graduates. Many students in the program find employment before graduation.
To date, the Educational Support Fund has raised more than $7,300 for students and Linda hopes that number will continue to grow. One of the ways that will happen is through an annual walk in memory of Amy that takes place in October. Funds raised from that walk will go towards supporting the fund.
