Student leader shares experience of leadership conference

Pravash Pandey

On November 13, Student Life held their annual MoCrew Student Leadership Conference, an evening of interactive workshops and opportunities for students to get to know each other while building their leadership skills.

Pravash Pandey, a student in the Global Business Management program, shares his experience of the event:

I am so grateful to have been part of the 2024 MoCrew Student Leadership Conference. It was an incredible experience to learn, grow, and connect with peers, facilitators, and hardworking organizers. A big thank you to Mohawk Student Life, especially to Ingie Metwally, for her effort and attention to detail.

The conference was packed with valuable sessions covering important topics that helped us reflect on our own strengths and how we can contribute to our communities. The facilitators and panelists shared so much wisdom, and their stories really inspired me to think bigger and challenge myself. One piece of wisdom I gained from the panelists was to give myself the freedom to make mistakes, explore new possibilities, and experiment with different options without fear of failure.

One of the best parts of the event was how engaging it was. We got to participate in activities that made learning fun and interactive. The session led by my Professor Karen Lawrence on "Where Have All the Followers Gone?" was energetic and engaging. It was highly interactive, with the professor asking a series of thought-provoking questions about different events and situations. We were asked to consider whether we were leaders or followers in each scenario, then move to designated areas depending on our role. At times, we were on the leader side, and at others, on the follower side. One of the key takeaways from the session was the important lesson that being a follower is not necessarily a negative position, which I think was valuable for everyone to hear.

The networking opportunities were also amazing - I met so many passionate and talented people who share the same goals of leading and making a difference.

Having been in Canada for less than a year, I feel so lucky to be part of such a supportive and inspiring community at Mohawk College. This conference showed me how much we can achieve when we come together to learn from one another and grow.

I am excited to take everything I have learned at the conference and use it in my leadership journey.
