Support for Ukrainian students continues at Mohawk

Recognizing the ongoing challenges and uncertainty being faced by students impacted by the war in Ukraine, Mohawk College has expanded its support through the summer semester, offering counselling, scholarships, residence and food support.

“Being so far from home and loved ones at this time can be traumatic for anyone,” said Louisa Drost, Dean of Students & Chief Health, Wellness & Accessibility Officer. “We are concerned for the well-being of affected students and have reached out to support them as they cope with the situation.”

Recently, Mohawk College offered scholarships per term to impacted students who are in Canada while the conflict unfolds. In addition, students have been offered free accommodation and meal plans in the college residence through the summer semester. Additional pantry items and gift cards were offered, as needed, through the Mohawk International Department ongoing food support program for international students.

In addition, on March 30, Mohawk announced that it had partnered with 18 colleges across Ontario to make a joint donation of $200,000 to UNICEF’s Ukraine emergency fund.

Donations to the Ukraine emergency fund will support the organization’s ongoing programs and response to the escalating need in Ukraine by providing communities with safe water, urgent medical aid and health-care services, child protection and education. UNICEF has been working in Ukraine since 1997.

Colleges across Ontario are assisting impacted students in similar ways, as institutions strive to support the wellness and academic success of college students at their institutions.
