The Mohawk Mountaineers are back in action

With the recent COVID-19 restrictions lifted by the province, Ontario Colleges Athletic Association will return to action.

A revised 2022 regular season schedule was released on Thursday, February 3 by the OCAA that will see five Mountaineers teams in action - the men’s and women’s basketball teams and men’s and women’s volleyball teams return to the gymnasium inside David Braley Athletic and Recreation Centre (DBARC) and the curling team will take to the ice in Sault Ste. Marie.

The women’s basketball team will begin play on Saturday, February 12, when they host the Redeemer Royals at 1 p.m. The men’s team will also host the Royals, afterward, with their game set to begin at 3 p.m.

Women’s and men’s volleyball action will begin on the road with back-to-back matches. On Feb. 12, they will play at Fanshawe versus the Flacons with the women’s game at 1 p.m. and men’s match at 3 p.m. The next day (Feb. 13) the Mountaineers will head to Windsor to play the St. Clair Saints at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.

Mountaineers curling will also return to action on Feb. 17-21 when they compete at the OCAA Championships. Unfortunately, the CCAA/U Sports National Championships for curling that were scheduled for March have been cancelled by Curling Canada.

Please note that no spectators will be permitted inside the DBARC to begin the season. All games will be streamed online via the OCAA Live platform.

Mountaineers in the Community

ChedokeStairsDespite sports action being halted during the month of January, the Mountaineers remained active in the community.

The Department of Athletics and Recreation, with the assistance of the Mountaineers cross country team, ran a weeklong mental health campaign from Jan. 24-28. In addition to social media initiatives that engaged students through daily activities focused on mental wellbeing, a fundraiser was held for the Centre of Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH). A total of $1,350 was raised for CAMH.

Mohawk cross country runners also tied in a challenge to the fundraiser, committing to do one rep of the Chedoke Stairs (289 steps) in Hamilton for every $5 raised. This totaled to 270 reps and 78,030 steps – which the team completed on one of the coldest days of the year.

The Mountaineers also produced a podcast with student-athlete Ashley Loff, cross country head coach David Hopton and athletic counsellor Sean Sydor. The three discussed tips and resources around sport and mental health. Link: https://soundcloud.com/user-663557719/episode-5-mental-health-ft-ashley-lof-david-hopton-sean-sydor

For the month of February the Mohawk Mountaineers will be celebrating Black History Month by highlighting their Black student-athletes. These profile highlights can be viewed on the Mohawk Mountaineers Instagram page.
