EDI Action Plan Update

First AODA audit underway at Mohawk College

Mohawk is completing its first accessibility audit as part a commitment to creating an accessible, barrier-free environment. The accessibility audit is one of the action items included in Mohawk's Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Action Plan that was shared with employees earlier this year.

This summer, the college hired third-party auditor, The Herrington Group, to audit Mohawk against all five of the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities (AODA) standards as they apply to postsecondary institutions in the province.

Since the audit began in early August, The Herrington Group has completed building audits for all campuses and satellite locations. They have also completed a review of www.mohawkcollege.ca and the Mohawk Library website. The audit results have been shared with marketing and IT, and the library’s management team. The findings and recommendation from these audits will be made available once the detailed audit report is available late this year or early in 2022.

“This is an important step in our Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Action Plan,” said Maxine Carter, Chief Equity and Inclusion Officer. “The results of this audit and the recommendations that come from it will help ensure that we are living up to our commitment to create an accessible, barrier-free environment at Mohawk.”

The next stages of the audit will look at customer service; employment standards; information and communication; micro and internal websites, including MyMohawk; and transportation. The auditors will be reviewing polices and practices and will be consulting with employees and students when it is necessary to gather more information.
