Sharon K - May 2022The College is committed to creating an environment in which everyone who learns and works at Mohawk feels a sense of belonging and can thrive.  Dr. Sharon Kamassah, Manager, Workplace Equity and Inclusion,  helps managers embed equity, diversity and inclusion in their policies, processes, and training to support these commitments.

Kamassah believes that the way leaders interact with their employees creates either a toxic or healthy work environment. For instance, when challenges arise, how managers choose to engage their employees in conversations speaks volumes about the value and trust they hold for their employees.

"It is important for managers to enter difficult conversations without presuming who the employee is or what they might say. It is more effective to begin the conversation by expressing their intentions, the facts and the impact of the situation and then asking open-ended questions. This will then give employees an opportunity to share their perspective. When asking questions with curiosity and compassion, managers may find that employees are willing to speak more openly about their concerns." ~ Sharon

This 19-minute EDI Difficult Conversations playlist presents practical strategies for having tough conversations that create safe spaces for employees.
